Buy for the wheels you will actually see
The single most expensive mistake in tyre bay equipment is specifying for the work you imagine rather than the work in your area.
A shop serving ordinary cars needs different capability from one taking large alloys, low-profile fitments, run-flats or light commercials, and the gap in price between those specifications is substantial. Guessing upward wastes capital; guessing downward means turning work away or damaging wheels.
The cheap way to find out is to look at what is parked locally and what the vehicle mix in your area actually is, before committing. That data is more reliable than an assumption about the customers you hope to attract.
The three that decide whether you can trade
Almost everything else is optional at the start. These are not.
- A tyre changer matched to the wheel sizes and types you will see, including whether you need assist arms for stiff sidewalls.
- A wheel balancer, because an unbalanced wheel is a comeback and comebacks are unpaid work.
- A means of lifting the vehicle safely, whether that is a ramp or jacks and stands appropriate to the work.

Where buying cheap costs more
Equipment economics in a tyre bay are unusual: the cheap option often works, and the cost shows up as time and damage rather than as failure.
A slow changer costs minutes on every job, and minutes on every job is the difference between five and seven cars in a morning. A changer that marks alloys costs you a wheel refurbishment and a customer. A balancer that needs two attempts to settle costs the same time twice.
So the calculation is not price against price, it is price against jobs per day and against the cost of the occasional damaged wheel. On the two machines you use every hour, that usually favours buying better than feels comfortable.
What can genuinely wait
Plenty of things that appear on a complete-bay list are worth deferring until the work demands them.
Alignment equipment is the clearest example: it is a significant investment, it needs space and training, and it is entirely reasonable to refer that work out until there is enough of it to justify owning the capability. The same applies to specialist tooling for vehicle types you rarely see.
The test is how often the equipment would be used and what the alternative costs. Sending out one job a week is cheaper than owning a machine that idles; sending out one a day is not.
Maintenance is part of the purchase
Equipment that is not maintained gets slower and starts damaging things, and both happen gradually enough that nobody notices the transition.
Ask about servicing, parts availability and calibration before buying rather than after. A balancer that cannot be calibrated locally is a balancer you will eventually be running on trust, and a changer whose consumable parts are hard to source becomes a bottleneck at the worst moment.
Budget for it as an ongoing cost rather than an occasional surprise. It is small relative to the machines and it is what keeps the jobs-per-day number where it was when you bought them.
Buying used, sensibly
Used tyre bay equipment can be excellent value and the risk is concentrated in specific places.
Wear parts, electronics and calibration are where the money hides. A well-used machine from a busy shop that was serviced is often a better buy than a lightly used one that sat in a damp unit, and the service history tells you which you are looking at.
See it working on a real wheel before buying, not powered up in a corner. The failures that matter are the ones that appear under load, and a five-minute demonstration on an actual fitment is worth more than any description.
